Just as I believe that the mind and body must be addressed together, so I believe that our career cannot be looked at in isolation. Our career is an expression of who we are and who we want to be. Our career needs to be viewed in conjunction with the other aspects of our lives.
I help clients in all phases of career. In Career Exploration we identify a rewarding career for you and plot the course to get you there. In the Job Search phase, I will guide you through the steps needed to help you obtain the desired job. Career Management is helping you, not only adjust to a new job and new responsibilities, but also helping you deal with potentially challenging coworkers or supervisors and in negotiating pay raises and compensation packages.
I
believe that career counseling should aim to help you understand how
your life matters to you and other people. Your life story has a theme
that matters, because on one hand, it gives meaning and purpose to your
work. It makes you care about what you do. On the other hand, what you
do and contribute to society matters to other people. This belief, that
what you do matters to others, is important in how you feel about
yourself. I believe career counseling is about
turning a personal concern into a public strength and even a social
contribution. The essential activity entails articulating what your
preoccupation is and discussing possible solutions in the form of
occupations. This involves helping you to construct interests. My job as
a career counselor is to help you create interests, rather than
assesssing interests with inventories. I help you create interests by
showing you how potential occupations address your preoccupations.
Job Search
During the actual job search phase, we will work together to identify
and target the particular companies that offer the opportunities for
which you are looking. We will systematically and purposefully inform
ourselves about the people who can most help us obtain the opportunity
that you want in those companies. Together, we will build positive
relationships within these companies and help them realize how great an
asset you would be to their organization. You will become the person
whom they are seeking. We will work diligently to identify and find the career you are seeking.
Career Management
Whether it is your first day at a new job or you have been there for
years, issues can arise. Learning new skills or staying interested in
performing old ones can seem unmanageable at times. Together, you and I
will confront and address any issues proving difficult for you. Whether it is building new relationships or
maintaining existing ones with coworkers and supervisors that may be
stressed or seem unmanageable, we will work together towards a more
positive path.
I believe that as your career counselor, I should be useful to you, not "right". I would be useful to you if I help you to understand your career story; your vocational personality and preferred work environments; prompt you to become more in control and confident about your future; help you to compose a success formula; and enable you to envision and explore possible selves and future scenarios. As a career counselor, I should help you author your life, not act as a fortune teller who makes predictions.
My typical client ranges in age from 20-70 years old. Their career paths have been in non-profit organizations, academia, government, trade associations, private contracting, service industries and many other areas.
